On July 29, Public Safety Officer Bruce Sutherland was honored in recognition of his extraordinary achievement of 45 years of service to the Port of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Port Police and the City of Los Angeles. The celebration was held at the Port Police headquarters, with his fellow Public Safety Officers, Sergeants and Lieutenants in attendance. After he received his award, guests enjoyed a luncheon in his honor. Officer Sutherland was honored to be recognized by his peers.

Officer Sutherland loves to paint; in fact, the picture depicted in the background of his award is a replica of one of his paintings of the Port of Los Angeles. The original painting is currently on display at the old San Pedro City Hall.

Officer Sutherland has seen many changes to the Port of Los Angeles but also to the Harbor Dept. He started his career 45 years ago under the direction of Construction and Maintenance, and many years later the Security Services Section was adopted by the Los Angeles Port Police. He mentioned that 45 years ago his patrols were done strictly on foot and used a Detex clock to record the number of times he patrolled a specific area.

Congratulations, Officer Sutherland, on your amazing service to the City! The Club salutes you.

Thanks to Lead Security Officer Patricia Escalante-Sandoval, Port Police Security Division, for her assistance.
