On April 8, the LAFD celebrated Capt. II Matthew Nolen as the 2025 Firefighter of the Year — an honor reflecting a career defined by service, leadership and dedication to others.
The award is hosted by the City of LA Firefighters Association.
Capt. Nolen is widely known for his quiet generosity, humility and steadfast commitment to mentoring others. He leads not with words but with consistent action, whether guiding Firefighters at the station, shaping the future of the department by serving as Drill Master in the academy for the past four years, or remaining a calm presence during the most demanding incidents. His influence is felt by all who have had the privilege of working alongside him.
For his leadership, lifelong devotion to community, mentorship, faith in others, and courage in the face of danger, Capt. Nolen exemplifies what it means to be an LAFD Firefighter.
Congratulations, Capt. II Nolen!
