From the CEO: The Life Aquatic

Each month when the Alive! team conducts the interviews for our informative and personable cover stories, themes usually emerge. This month’s is no exception.

I heard the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium renovation team mention that they live near the Aquarium in case they need to hurry back for a sea life emergency. That they have always wanted to work at the Aquarium. That there can be no Aquarium without its mission of education. That they spend their spare time looking at the fish behind the scenes or the kids imitating the sharks.

This is career immersion. Or, using a better word, passion. I see it regularly with the public servants we celebrate. When you read about the Aquarium’s rebuild, don’t miss the passion that made it all possible. We thank Crislyn McKerron, Jeff Landesman, Martha Vaca Perez, Jim DePompei and Chanthell Nelson for their impressive work.

Service Pins

This month we introduce our newest tribute to public service – Pins of Purpose, our new Service Recognition Pins, a tasteful and public way to honor you for your years of service. We’ll have more on this soon, but, eligible Club Members, make sure to register today to receive visible recognition for your steadfast dedication. I thank Club staffer Lupe Lira, Director of Digital Marketing, for her hard work bringing this together.

Mukai Scholarships

Congratulations to the 34 awardees of the Joannie Mukai Club Scholarship. Joannie, a former Club Board Member who passed away 16 years ago, would be proud of the honorees.

I invite you to read the essays of the honorees on the Alive! website, and I thank the Club’s Scholarship Committee, headed by our Mariana Guevara.

A State of Champions

Raise a glass with me to the thousands of law enforcement professionals who conquered the annual Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay. My favorite element is how the California jurisdictions support one another (while still being competitive!). Club Members represent the City and County of Los Angeles, local jurisdictions and many California departments. We truly are the Employees Club for all of California. A special nod to Arlene Herrero, Club Chief Business Officer; DeAngelo Thompson, Retail Operations Manager; and Guadalupe Lira, Director of Digital Marketing, for their outstanding work at Baker to Vegas this year.”

Worth Considering

Everyone carries unseen challenges. A simple, “How are you really doing?” can lighten their load and remind them they are not alone. We’re all guilty of asking that question on autopilot. That one extra word – “really” – can change everything.

This is August, so make sure you recharge your passion with family and friends for the busy Fall just ahead.
