From the CEO: King Pins

By definition, a kingpin stands at the very top of an organization, the most important and respected. That would be you, Club Members: Kings and Queens of our deep admiration. You put your years into public service, and it’s time to wear that accomplishment proudly on your lapel, or collar, or handbag strap, or wherever you like. You tell everyone that you’re true Club kingpins.

That’s what Pins of Purpose is all about – honoring you while you’re still working (or Retired) for your deep dedication. (The pins, which are complimentary to eligible Members, are beautiful and of high quality, by the way.)

I hope the photos in this month’s issue of our first Pins of Purpose event give you an idea of the gratitude we have for our Members. We celebrated one Member from each of our three main constituencies – the City of Los Angeles, the County of Los Angeles, and the State of California. Wives and granddaughters came to applaud their loved ones. Joy that one could feel abounded in the room.

After just one month, Pins of Purpose has become one of our most popular benefits. And we’re just getting started. Be a part of it: If you’re eligible, submit your request to be celebrated as part of a Pins of Purpose ceremony at Club Headquarters or at your workplace. Give us the chance to celebrate you.

Finally, I bestow special thanks to Club Team Members Lupe Lira, Club Director of Digital Marketing, for bringing Pins of Purpose to life, and to Alive! designer David Jamgotchian, for designing the elegant pins.

Alive! Asks

We introduce a new feature this month: Alive! Asks, a fun read that helps readers (and us!) get to know Members better by posing fun questions (and sneaking in a few worth deeper contemplation, too). Club Board Member Jackie Koci Tamayo is first up, with an intriguing answer to the secret of a good sandwich. I’ve thought about her insight while at lunch the last few days!

Speaking of Jackie, who is a Division Head in Santa Clara County’s Office of Emergency Management, September is National Preparedness Month. It is always a good time to review best practices for keeping our families safe during an emergency. City of LA employees can check into the City’s Emergency Management Dept. for guidance. Word to the wise, for sure.

Worth Considering

Gratitude can supercharge you—it’s like a superfood smoothie for the soul, while anything else is just plain junk food. Dodge the toxic crowd, Champ – because your peace is priceless.

Enjoy your Fall, when our brutal heat and humidity might finally ease!
