Jackie Koci Tamayo is Program Manager III and Division Head in Santa Clara County’s Office of Emergency Management. As part of the leadership team, she provides leadership, strategic direction and operational oversight for county-wide mitigation, disaster recovery, resilience strategy and public/private partnership initiatives. Previously she was an EM for the Superior Courts of CA, Alameda County and EMC for LA City’s EMD and Rec and Parks depts. She joined the Club in 2010 and is a Club Board Member.
Since you started your career, what’s remained the same?
“Originally I imagined a future in law, but life took me in a different direction and I went into public service. One thing has remained constant between Recreation and emergency management: my commitment to serving my community. The profession has changed; what’s remained the same is purpose.”
Why public service?
City-led programs made me who I am. If it weren’t for Rec and Parks and its programs, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Public service is my way of honoring that.”
Favorite day of the week:
“Wednesday. It breaks the monotony of the week and gives me that little push I need to finish strong.”
Favorite dessert:
“Too many! But my simple go-to is mango or Cherry Garcia ice cream. When we move into fall and winter, it’s pan dulce with a cup of ponche.”
What’s the secret sauce — the extra good thing — of … a sandwich?
“Balance – the right combination of meats, cheese and a well-made aioli.”

“Our ability to bring people together. We are connectors. We are the glue of public safety.”
… the Club?
“The ability to truly connect the entire state and genuinely care about its Members.”
Inspiration:
“My mom. She immigrated to this country at a young age and worked tirelessly to give me an amazing life. She always said that giving me the best education would be her legacy. But her true legacy is so much more: She taught me to never give up on myself, to never say ‘I can’t’, and to trust that no matter the obstacle, I will always find my way. Love you, Mommy!”

“Ricky Martin. And honestly still is. That love really never went away.”
What lifts your wings?
“Seeing people succeed – that they reach where they want to go, succeed and surpass.”
Make a wish:
“For everyone to find peace within their hearts and be in harmony, in a place where forgiveness comes easier. If we embraced our differences, we could unify and be better for one another.”

“Where do hamburgers like to dance? At a meatball.”
