Approximately 12,000 visitors celebrated Central Library’s 100th anniversary at the day-long Centennial Festival July 11.
Highlights included a conversation between City Librarian John F. Szabo, Club Member, and writer Susan Orlean; a performance by the punk band the Linda Lindas, whose live concert at the closed Cypress Park LAPL branch during COVID went viral and made them known throughout the world; and a centennial Sphinx-shaped birthday cake ceremoniously cut on stage to the accompaniment of mariachis.
Guests lined up for craft tables, loved the giant pop-up book exhibit, and enjoyed exploring both Central Library and booths by partnering organizations outside in Maguire Gardens.
Behind-the-scenes tours, food trucks, and crafts for children and adults were also offered.
The Centennial Festival was part of a year-long celebration of the crown jewel of the Los Angeles Public Library, the Central Library downtown.
