I find it difficult to overemphasize how much the devastating fires in January 2025 have changed our lives. Their aftermath affects nearly every single City employee in every department every day. We have lost so much. But all you need to do to find signs of life is remember the heroes who saved lives and worked to get the City on its feet again. That is what this month’s cover story is all about.
In the year since the fires, the City has honored those employee heroes. So do we here: We review our coverage from last year to remember and celebrate those who answered the call and met the moment.
Honoring the helpers can prove emotionally healthy by using their courage to move us forward. We can start anew with a fresh outlook.
I say a sincere and heartfelt thank-you to the heroes of the fires, and I continue to pray for their health and safety.
Congrats, Capt. Erik
Speaking of the fires, LAFD Capt. Erik Scott has penned a book that goes behind the scenes of the City’s devastation and resilience. Club readers, check it out!
Finding Purpose in Retirement
The great American writer Mark Twain once said: “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born, and the day you find out why.” Retired Club Members, what is your purpose in life? Have you found it yet? Have you searched for it, or began to think about it? Is it weighing on you?
You matter to the Club. Very much! That is why our Retiree Society is once again offering its outstanding (and free for Members) two-hour workshops for Retirees to explore your value, worth and purpose in retirement. The Retiree Society is offering it four times this year, starting next month. For more information, look to page 6.
Please sign up. I promise you it will widen your smiles.
Valentines
Browsing our annual feature on Club Valentines (go to page 21) is a treat for many Club Members, and that includes me. If you would still like to callout your forever bestie but didn’t submit it in time for our print edition, you can submit by Feb. 11 (use the link on page 5) and be included online. Happy Valentine’s Day, Club Members!
Worth Considering
What’s one “no” you’re turning into fuel for your next “yes”? May every “no” turn into the one “yes” you’ve been waiting for this month. Keep going; it’s coming.
