LA Councilmembers and departments were well represented at the recent Martin Luther King Jr. parade and Freedom Festival, held Jan. 19 in Leimert Park.
Councilmember Heather Hutt was a prominent organizer and participant in the celebrations, co-hosting the Freedom Festival with fellow Councilmembers Marqueece Harris-Dawson and Curren Price, and marching in the Kingdom Day Parade.
“On this MLK Day, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose fight for civil rights and workers’ rights continues to guide us,” Hutt said. “In Los Angeles, we’re home to a vast and powerful diaspora, and in the heart of South LA, we see Dr. King’s vision reflected in communities built by labor and love.
“This celebrating is tailed with action: Standing with working people, protecting our communities, and continuing the work to build a more just and equitable Los Angeles for all.”
StreetsLA
Public Works/StreetsLA joined community members, organizations and leaders to celebrate and commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Thank you to all who participated in the parade,” the bureau wrote. “We are proud to be a part of this annual event uplifting the life and legacy of Dr. King.”
LADWP
LADWP employees, family members and friends, led by LADWP’s professional chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, marched in the Los Angeles Official MLK Day Parade. In keeping with Dr. King’s values, LADWP provides water and power to the City of L.A. affordably, sustainably, reliably and equitably, the department wrote. LADWP’s parade theme, “Join the Team,” highlighted the department’s diverse, nearly 12,000-strong workforce and the almost 150 different civil service jobs it offers.
