On Feb. 19 at the Board of Public Works meeting, the Bureau of Engineering presented this year’s Rory M. Shaw Award to Ethan Wong, Principal Civil Engineer. This prestigious award honors Rory M. Shaw, a dedicated Bureau of Engineering employee who tragically lost his life in the storms of 2005 while performing his duties. It recognizes employees who demonstrate unwavering dedication, commitment to excellence, and significant contributions to the Bureau’s mission.
With more than 23 years of City service at the Bureau, Ethan Wong has played an integral role in various capital improvement projects, significantly impacting the City’s infrastructure. His career has encompassed stormwater management, development services, fire facility construction, and award-winning projects at the Los Angeles Zoo. His leadership and expertise have been instrumental in the successful execution of numerous high-profile projects, including the construction of several new fire stations, the redevelopment of Asphalt Plant No. 1, and advancements in wastewater treatment. Currently, he leads a team of 77 staff members managing 119 projects with a total construction value of $1.38 billion, ensuring the continued development of sustainable water management systems in Los Angeles.
Ethan’s commitment to engineering excellence and public service stems from a life long passion for infrastructure and community development. Born and raised in West Los Angeles, he attended Cal State University, Northridge, where he earned a degree in civil engineering and was an active member of the ASCE Student Steel Bridge Team. Over the years, he has lived in various Los Angeles neighborhoods before settling in Simi Valley with his wife, Tina, and their three children. Beyond his professional achievements, Ethan is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of engineers, sharing his knowledge, and fostering innovation within the Bureau. The Club congratulates Ethan Wong on this well-deserved honor.
