LAFD: Several LAFD Firefighter/Paramedics and EMS personnel were honored in late May during Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week.
EMS professionals bring exceptional skill, sound judgment and unwavering dedication to patient encounters. Whether delivering cutting-edge prehospital care, making rapid lifesaving decisions, or offering comfort during moments of uncertainty, EMS personnel’s work reflects the best of public service. They improve outcomes not only through medicine, but through their commitment to the department’s mission and to each other.
LAFD EMS personnel honored during EMS Week included:
Firefighter/Paramedic Jerome Woodcock was honored as Paramedic of the Year; Firefighter/Paramedic Brian George and Firefighter Ralph Bassil were recognized as nominees for Paramedic and EMT of the Year; and Battalion 6 EMS Capt. Jay Walker received the Award of Excellence for outstanding leadership and service, all at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center EMS Day;
Firefighter/Paramedic Matthew Zeller was honored as the 2026 Paramedic of the Year, marking the second time in his career he’s received the honor, from Los Angeles General Medical Center;
Firefighter/Paramedic Steven Balue was honored as Paramedic of the Year at California Hospital Medical Center; and
Firefighter/Paramedic Matthew Bergeson was honored as Paramedic of the Year, chosen by the nursing staff at Northridge Hospital. This marks the fourth consecutive year he’s won the award.
The Club sincerely thanks these and all Firefighter/Paramedics for the literally life-saving services they provide to the City of Los Angeles, and honors them for their service.
